The Cereal Box Phenomenon

Posted by NoPurchaseNecessary Sep. 9, 2008 @ 11:56 PM EDT

In my days of working retail, I've been constantly afflicted by the Cereal Box phenomenon (or the CBP if you will). Allow me to explain.

You remember when toys still came in cereal boxes when you were little? And how you would have to pull the bag out to get to it, only to find that the bag of cereal would not fit back inside? You basically had to stuff it in there, and the box would bulge on either side. There was no way to put the bag back in as it was, unless you ate the cereal first (but honestly, what 6 year-old has such patience?).

We have in clothing retail what are called '1-sie bars' where an assortment of older items will be placed when there aren't many left, but they aren't old enough to be considered sale items. These bars can be exceedingly full. The CBP occurs when I'm closing my section of the store, and a take a bunch of items off the bar to reorganize them and replace them on the bar. Trouble is... they don't fit after I organize them. I'm left with like 10 items that honest-to-God will not fit on that bar. And I don't know what to do.

Retail makes me want to punch a lot of people in the windpipe and run away.
